Why is the Bible essential to cultural literacy?

Because it was the root work of literature (along with Homer and Virgil) that informed the minds of the works of genius that inform our minds. Without knowing biblical allusions, one's understanding and enjoyment of Dante, Milton, Shakespeare, or even Joyce, Hemingway and Faulkner (to name but a few) is incomplete.
