How do you keep your compost from smelling?

I have a compost bin which is like a garbage can with a top. it sits in the heat and it decomposes the waste. My backyard is starting to smell. I think it is partially because I am not mixing it enough. But any ideas what else I can be doing to make it smell better. I can't take the smell.
