Weening 9 m.o. from night feedings and putting him in crib?

My 9 month old fed son has been sleeping with us since day one..he was still waking 1-3 times a night to nurse. After a doctor's apt today, she suggested putting him in his crib with a full belly, a paci, and a small stuffed toy. He's standing in his crib screaming and crying bloody murder as we speak. She said no more night time feedings-cut him off completely...she also said to check on him every 15 mins if we need to..no picking him, up..no speaking...maybe rub his back if he's laying down...he's steadily crying..we did this once before and he cried and stood for several hours before we scooped him up and brought him back to bed :( It's breaking my heart...any words of advice?
