Troubles with Wi-Fi connection on iPod touch?

I don't get the list of available Wireless Networks on my iPod touch. I went to the Apple website and looked at all their Troubleshooting and FAQ's, but I had already done what it said to do. I have the Wi-Fi turned ON and Ask to Join Networks ON. Reading online, it sounded like I should have a list of available Wi-Fi connections where ever I go, (with the exception of the private networks). I have never had a list of the networks available. How can I get a list? Is there something wrong with my iPod touch?
